Restoring XP

I have an older HP system that had a hard disk failure. I am attempting

to recreate XP on the system. I installed an new HDand I have the

Recovery Console CD.



On my first attempt the system r4cognized the CD and gave several

options to do a repair. I chose the Install XP option and the system

paused for short while and then displayed the message that Windows XP

was not found on the system.



I retried again planning do select the option for a Console recovery but

all I get is black screen with the word "mpresora" and a flashing

underline mark at at the top left of the screen. If I press ENTER I

get a pause and then the same word and flashing underline character.



I would appreciate any ideas anyone might have to how I should proceed.

What you seem to have is a CD that boots the system and then looks

for the "recovery Partition" that is on the Original HD in order

to install XP. You will need to contact HP with the model # of

you system and purchase a Full Recovery CD for a nominal sum.

We are supposed to know what *hardware* you have? If you have SATA hard

disks then Windows XP won't recognize them since there are no included

generic drivers in Windows XP. That means the installer will fail because

it cannot find any mass storage on which to install Windows.



That the install CD runs and then says that an old version of Windows XP was

not found means you are using an *upgrade* CD. Well, to upgrade means you

need to have an existing install. Did you insert the full version of your

prior Windows install CD so the new install CD could see the old version on

that old CD? While you can do a fresh install using an upgrade CD, you

still need to verify that you have a full version somewhere. The upgrade CD

gave you an *upgrade* license (which replaces the full license for the prior

version and why you still only have 1 license after an upgrade).



With a full version install CD, you can do either a full (fresh) or upgrade

install of the new version. With an upgrade version of the install CD, you

can only do an upgrade so you have to prove you have a full version (already

installed or available on an install CD for the prior version). With an OEM

version, you can only do a full (fresh) install.

Thank you for the response. I looked at this site but it assumes that I

have an existing version of XP on the system. Obviously I cannot run XP

adviser since I cannot get past the point where the word "mpresors_"

appears.

Peter, thank you for your response. The CD I have is labeled

"recovery console, Windows XP Home Edition. I notices that on the first

attempt to do an install one of the options when Windows started was

"recovery console." Unfortunately, I did not chose that but went for a

full repair. It was when I made the second attempt (where I was going

to select the console recovery option that it hangs at the very

beginning with the black screen with the word ""mpresora_) and the hangs

here.



I'll try to contact HP and see if I can get something going there.

There's your problem.



That particular CD will only work with the *original* hard drive (which

contains all the files necessary for an HP/XP "recovery").



This is the biggest flaw to this particular method of "recovery" or

reinstallation. If the hard drive is shot, you're screwed!



You need to contact HP. Hopefully they are still supporting this

particular model and can ship you a full-fledged Windows XP installation

CD.



Otherwise you may obtain (not necessarily easy if you don't know a

computer tech or hobbyist!) a generic OEM XP installation CD. The type

of XP (e.g., Home or Pro) must match the license that it on the

Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker that is probably affixed

somehwere on the case of this PC. When it is time to enter the Product

Key, you normally (with a few exceptions) need to enter the Key on this

COA sticker.

Or, you could go to www.restoredisks.com and see if they have a set of disks for that model.

They will sell you a set of disks that do the same thing as the disks supplied by HP, but they have

most of the older models in stock.

Their charge is typically less than $30 USD.

Excellent suggestion, Richard. I had forgotten about that site!



(Then again, the recovery disk might very well come with all that

obnoxious trialware and crapware. :-( )

You also have to have a Windows XP install disk. "Recovery" disks don't use

this procedure.

Yes, you get the crapware, but you automatically get all the drivers installed. For some PC owners

that is a big plus during the restore cycle. With an OEM disk, they have to find and download the

applicable drivers.
