I apologize for starting another thread, but since this covers several of the
topics I'm condensing it to a new thread. First, I want to say THANX! to you
all for preventing from reformatting tonight!!! Now I know it wasn't just my
computer the updates screwed up again. I just spent two hours on the phone
with Dell and their last suggestion was reformat. They weren't aware this
problem was occurring. My wouldn't install the 5 updates either. I could
install the .net 1.1, manually only, but as others have reported, .net 2 said
a component was missing. I tried uninstalling and re-installing both several
times. cleaning files and registry each time. Although it said they were
installed, i hot the same error messages. Thinking I could do a work around,
I decided to do a windows repair. WRONG!!! After the windows repair, it
wouldn't install ANY of THE EIGHTY updates!@#*!!@%!!@ I have MANUALLY
installed them all again, EXCEPT, that's right, you guessed it, the .net
updates WON'T INSTALL!!! This is made even more frustrating because when I
did the repair, it REINSTALLED .net1.1 successfully....How long does it
usually take for microsoft to correct this mess or even answer some of the
requests? As an FYI, this is a two year old Dell Dimension 3000 that is fully
updated and had been working fine until this newest update mess. Like
others, even though the uninstaller said it had unistalled 1.1 and 2.0, low
and behold, when I opened up add/remove programs and ZSoft uninstaller, there
they were again. This is the second time a Windows update has screwed up my
computer. But since I know it happened to you too, my suggestion is be
patient a day or two and hopefully they'll fix it.

Now you'll need to...

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

2. Now (re)install this (updated) fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

NB: Windows Update/Automatic Updates started offering 927891 on 22 May-07.
If "Update for [Windows XP] (KB927891)" is listed in Add/Remove Programs
(make sure Show Updates box is checked), it's already installed. cf.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/927891.mspx

3. Reboot.

....before you'll be able to install anything via Windows Update or Automatic
Updates.

I think I have the same problem with Windows xp SP2 . I had to change
motherboards. I changed the IDE controller to standard and removed the
display adapter. I moved the drive to the new computer, (same processor ,
different motherboard). I got a blue screen on boot up so had to do a windows
repair. After repairing and reactivating windows, disabling my antivirus and
opening the firewall - I then tried to update and the first thing that failed
was replacing the windows installer. So I installed the stand alone version
which was successful. After that, some 87 updates downloaded but failed to
install. So I installed the following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891
, rebooted and. found the update files and deleted them and ran update again.
After which all updates download but still failed to install which will leave
me with the 18 hour task of reinstalling all the software. Microsoft has
done a piss poor job of addressing this issue. Searches of the error message
produced turns up nothing helpful. Is there any help for this?
