Reactivation nightmare

Hardware has been changed on my computer and suddenly it wants windows 10 reactivated. I find the windows 7 key I was given when I purchased it, this is apparently not sufficient. I try the troubleshooter, connect the windows installation to my Microsoft account (which I haven't used in years). There are no devices connected to this Microsoft account. I eventually try resetting, I'm now completely locked out of my computer as it wants my Microsoft account password now which doesn't seem to work, I can't reset my password as I've apparently requested too many codes.
