Yes, me too, though I did manage to do a restore and get things working
again. I've got auto-update active, so I probably wouldn't have known if it
hadn't demanded a re-boot.

I'm relieved to know that it wasn't something I did. It looks like microsoft
messed up this time.

I installed those two updates and the same thing happened to me....I was
connected by ethernet and was running AVG and Zone Alarm. By uninstalling
KB951748, my internet connection was restored. Thanks for your post.

I'm having the same probem. No internet connection after the last automatic
update. I had to use a restore point to restore my connection.

I too got bamboozzled by these updates and LOST ability to go on line, I
spent about an hour with a Verizon Tech Support fella in India [almost needed
a translater] and he finally determined that the problem was with my Browser.
I then finally "stumbled" onto the idea to find a Restore point prior to
these MS Downloads and Installs............WALA.......I was up and running
again. Being a glutton for punishment I tried installing them again and sure
enough - wiped out the use of the Internet................BUT......when I go
to the Update Site and have it tell me WHAT updates etc. have been
installed......it shows the small green dot, meaning that the Security Update
and the SP Update were installed......BUT....this too....must be in error,
becuase this AM when I started my machine it tells me that they need to be
installed...........................RATS!!!!!!!!!

That Zone Alarm work around is to complicated for me to tackle....I am still
burnt out from all of the frustration yesterday.

Would it work to TURN OFF ZA, immediately download/install them, then turn
ZA back on again??????

IF not - I am not going to install these two Internet killers until I know
they won't make me do another restore.

THANKS, Michael

Error Message After You Install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 Update
From Windows Update or From Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818

You need to find out how to tell your firewall to grant internet access
to the updated version of Internet Explorer. (Directions are probably in
your user manual or Help file.)

"Would it work to TURN OFF ZA, immediately download/install them, then
turn ZA back on again??????"

You're supposed to temporarily disable your security software (except
your firewall) when installing software, particularly updates from
Windows/Microsoft Update. Otherwise your security software can prevent
your system from being changed.

Hi,

I worked around the issue by first looking at my ZoneAlarm Firewall logs,
noting all blocked outgoing connections under destination and taking note of
the ports at the and of the ip address (those are the numbers at the after
the colon 65.54.191.188:xxx) Most critical for web surfing is port 80. There
are many others that will impact other functions on the web, be it your email
service, secured internet sites etc. So anything that does not work as it
should is likely being blocked.

Once you know them, go to the firewall tab, Internet Zone Security, click
the custom radio button, next scroll down to Allow outgoing TCP ports, check
it off and add the port numbers that you find in the logs seperated by a
comma. Apply the changes and you should no longer have any problems.

While setting the the trusted zone to medium security, unintalling Zone
Alarm or other suggestions go, IMHO, they leave you too vunerable and I feel
are risky options.

Hope this helps!
