Random applications opening when pressing any key on the keyboard

I will be typing away when suddenly a new window or an application will open up, typically clearing my draft. This is happening inconsistently, but several times a day. I've removed the caps-lock key, so the issues associated with that set of malfunctions is not relevant to this problem. I've read that his can happen if the windows key gets stuck, but that's apparently not the case here. I'm having other issues with the keyboard as well, such as keystrokes not registering on screen, leaving incomplete words that I then have to go back and correct.
