Ran update, now laptop won't boot - message: default boot device missing or boot failed

A couple of days ago I restarted my laptop to run a windows update. Seems to have failed, now the laptop won't boot and all I get is the message 'default boot device missing or boot failed'. Is there anything I can do or is it now dead?
