I have following problem with BITS:

In the services it's always stopped manual. When I run updates i get errors
because of that. I tried several times to put it to automatique and start the
service. It does start and stays started until i reboot. Then it's back to
stopped and manual. Why doesn't it stay on automatique? Is it normal? If not
how can this be solved?

Checkpoint -

Click Start, select Run and type in: services.msc
Click OK

Right-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service and select Properties.
Click on Log On tab.
In Hardware Profile field (located at the bottom), see if the Service status is Disabled
for your Hardware Profile.
If it is click to highlight the Hardware Profile in this field, then click on the Enable
button and then click on Apply.
Now, click on General tab and click on Start under Service Status.

Hi Henri,
Just a thought, make sure RPC service is set to auto as BITS depends on it.

Hm, any hints in the Event Log (Start -> Run -> eventvwr.msc [Enter key])?
Which Windows version are you using?

Bye,
Freudi

Nothing in the eventviewer that explains this.

When I launch it manually, (start the service) it does work without any
problem.

I'm working with Windows XP SP2 completely upgraded.

Hm, not even a Download Manager and the like installed which may cause this?

You may wanna try updating to BITS 2.5 which isn't offered by WU/MU/AU yet:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a064bf14-e54c-4e8c-85e7-1e3be1628b2d

HTH,
Freudi

I have installed it, will use it soon and report feedback on it
