Hi -
I am having the same problem as referenced in this post:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/print-spooler-not-working-in-windows-7/33b78e82-3b46-4b86-b42f-aa75739ace45?tab=question&status=AllReplies&status=AllReplies%2cAllReplies&auth=1
where the print spooler starts when I turn on the computer, but then stops automatically. I am able to restart it, but it again stops automatically.
I have run both FixIt routines mentioned in the query referenced above ( http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9829710 and http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9829711 ) and it does not remedy the problem -- when trying to reinstall my printer, I still get the error that the print spooler is not running. I manually restart the spooler, but again, it stops automatically.
Have tried every suggestion I have been able to find online, such as making sure the 'printers' folder was empty, even to the point of replacing my spool folder and registry entries with those from another Win7 machine which is able to print to the same printer, to no avail. Have unplugged the printer, rebooted PC, plugged printer back in, rebooted, etc.
I have a Dell Dimension XPS 420 desktop running Windows 7 Professional, SP1, 64-bit OS. (was originally Win XP that I upgraded to Win 7) Printer is a Canon PIXMA 882, combo printer/scanner/copier/fax. Have only had Canon printers, no other brand. Could print one day, next day I started getting the 'spooler not running' error. I still could copy/fax/scan, just no print. I do not have Norton or McAfee antivirus products - I read somewhere that those could be a cause of problems.
Did not install any new hardware/software, no updates or anything, which is why it's so frustrating -- there is nothing I can 'go back to', as nothing was changed. Tried system restore anyway-- went back to the earliest restore point available -- did not remedy the problem.
There is a newer driver for my printer on the Canon website, but alas, I cannot download it, as the spooler won't stay running. Also can't reinstall my printer now, same reason.
The Windows System32 Spool Printers folder is empty; the RPC starts automatically (and stays started).
I've run the printer troubleshooter -- says can't detect any errors.
Event Viewer gives me lots of errors -- EVENT 503 - Print Service
The system failed to initialize the local print provider: Error 0x7e. This can occur because of system instability or a lack of system resources.
Display Name: Print Spooler
Exit Code: 1067
Service Name: Spooler
Path: C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe
Service Code: 0
Started: False
State: Stopped
Any thoughts as to how to resolve this?
Many thanks, this is driving me crazy.
Anna
