Win 7 Pro 64bit up-to-date, IE 11, and Microsoft Security Essentials:

Received a Microsoft account security alert email stating "We think that someone else might have accessed the Microsoft account *** Email address is removed for privacy ***. When this happens, we require you to verify your identity with a security challenge and then change your password the next time you sign in." I have no idea what triggered the alert but there are no apparent problems. Although the account was not compromised, I immediately changed the password and ran a Microsoft Security Essentials scan.

While running the scan, the message "Preliminary scan results show that a malicious or potentially unwanted software might exist on your computer system. You can review detected items when scan is complete" is displayed on the Home tab. However, when the scan is completed there are no results in the History tab. I then prepared a usb drive with Windows Defender Offline, booted to the usb drive and ran the scan with no results. Rebooted to Win 7 Pro and ran Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and Microsoft Safety Scanner both with no results. I uninstalled and reinstalled Microsoft Security Essentials and ran the scan again with the same preliminary results message and no results displayed in the History tab. I changed all the Default actions in the Settings tab to Quarantine and ran another scan with the same results.

So what is going on? How can I get rid of this disappearing Preliminary scan results message?
