playing dead island on windows 11 and controller kinda doesnt work?

Hello! i am using a series x controller to play dead island (the original game not definitive edition) when i try to use the controller it kinda works but when i try to push the analog stick i walk backwards instead of forward and nothing i do can fix it. should i buy the definitive edition to be able to play?thank you if anyone can help me?
