Hi all,

I can see that this topic has been spoken about in various ways, but some posts seem dated so I am hoping you can help me with an up to date answer.

This evening my mom was called on her land lane by a gentleman claiming to be from Microsoft Manchester office. The purpose of the call was to inform my mom that her computer had been hacked and was sending out e mails to various people stating she needed help, was in danger etc. My mom is not a computers best friend and asked the gentleman to call back when she had more time. I asked my mom to send the detail to me if he called back so that I could ascertain if this gentleman was legit having been aware of many scams.

When the gentleman called me, he spoke very, very fast again claiming he was from the Manchester office, the computer had been hacked and he needed to talk my mom through the process to block the hackers. I asked him how he obtained my moms landline number and also for proof he was who he said he was. He claimed to have the computer ID number found through her static IP. I was happy to give me the number but as I was not at my moms house it was of no use to me. He said he will call my mom back and tell her how to get it and I said that as I did not believe he was legit, I would not allow my mom to follow his instructions. He is going to call back at 10:30 tomorrow morning, by which I should have had the chance to check over the computer my self but I would appreciate any heads up.

He claimed that no money would be taken for the service..... which leads me to believe something still isn't right. I checked my mom's e mails but could not see any spam emails in her sent items. I have found a contact number for the Manchester office and do intend on calling them direct in the morning.

Your advice is gratefully appreciated.

thank you
