pc hangs on log in

Hi,

I have a laptop that has just started this problem. When I start it I have

to press ctr -alt-delete to log on. If I am in the office I usually log onto

the domain, when out of the office I log onto the 'computer'. I have a

username setup and of course I can also log on to the computer as

Administrator.



It doesn't matter how I log on, using username or admin, to the domain or to

Computer, I type the username and password in and then the computer starts

to load personal settings but actually never gets any further. I am able to

login in safe mode onto the computer (not the domain).



I have run Malwarebytes and it did find 4 items but it is clear now. The

computer had AVG installed but I have uninstalled it to see if that was the

problem. I have also done a system restore from safe mode but this made no

difference. All the log files show no indication of what might be causing

the hanging. CHKDSK found nothing.



Any help with this would be appreciated. I am hoping that I don't have to

reinstall XP.

You should ask your network administrator to fix the problem for you.
 
I don't believe it is anything to do with the network as the same problem

occurs if I try logging on to the computer out of the office and onto the

local computer. But Safe mode seems to work OK.



Even if it is the network I would still like to get it sorted myself. We

don't have a network administrator.

What I was referring to was your first level of support. In an environment

where machines are connected to a domain, there is usually a trained and

qualified support person and it would be his job to deal with issues like

yours. In most cases this person would not appreciate having outsiders

interfere with his job.

Here are a few things I would try:

- Log on to the domain in Safe Mode with Networking.

- Create a new account and see if the problem persists.

- See if the machine can be pinged from some other machine.

- Disasble all startup tasks and all non-Microsoft services visible through

msconfig.exe.

- Check if the machine really hangs or if it simply fails to complete the

logon process. Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc will tell you.



Note also that your statement "I have run Malwarebytes and it did find 4

items but it is clear now" may be overly optimistic. Anti-virus/malware

programs are pretty good at fighting off an attack but cannot possibly

repair all damage. I could write a little program that modifies the registry

in a certain way. You could easily remove the program but unless you had

analysed the program thoroughly you would be hard pushed to know damage it

had done.
