One Drive - how to open Office documents in a shared folder

I have a shared public One Drive folder containing files set read/download only and provide the link to the folder to several people. Peviously any one accessing the folder via the link could open all files in the folder including MS Office files ( Powerpoint etc.) without having to log into a Microsoft account. This was a very convenient feature. I now find that if while NOT logged into my MS account I use the link to the folder as a remote user would and then attempt to open an MS Office document in the folder, a prompt to log into a Microsoft account appears.
