OE6 Upgrade

Hello:



I am using Microsoft's Windows XP (SP3) platform and Outlook Express 6

(OE6) is my main email application.

Recently I installed Internet Explorer 8 and so I am wondering if OE6 has a

corresponding upgrade to say OE7 or OE8.



* Can Outlook Express 6 (OE6) be upgraded to say Outlook Express 7 or 8

?

* If this upgrade is possible; I am interested in how to do it ?

* Can Microsoft Outlook client work as a stand alone application or do I

need the Server also ?



I like OE6 but I need to be able to add audio alarms (using message rules)

when certain emails arrive. Thus the need to upgrade

from OE6 to something higher.

OE is history. No more updates. No new versions. I would suggest using

Thunderbird as it is a FAR superior product to Outhouse Distress. It has

an excellent junk filter, corrects your spelling as you type and has

hundreds of add ons like a calendar and a to do function. Get it at

OE6 is it, no more to come. It has been replaced (for all intents and

purposes) by Windows Live Mail.



Outlook can be used as a stand-alone application, no problem. Keep in mind

that to access newsgroups with it, you'll need one of the add-ons, such as

this http://www.mapilab.com/outlook/nntp/ , or use a separate program

altogether.



There are also plenty of non-Microsoft email and newsreader clients, and a

number of email/newsreader combos. Run a few of them and see which works

best for what you are trying to do.

I don't do newer versions in Linux. When it comes down the repository

pike, I'll upgrade. I've got it on my Windows boxes too and TB3 is

pretty cool.

You're right, it's not too bad. I prefer OE6 on XP and WLM on Win7 myself. I

tried TB for a few weeks, but never could get the newsreader to display like

I wanted it to (or, probably more correctly, like I was used to), so I

dumped it and went back to WLM. I know there are separate programs for each,

but I kinda like the "all in one place" concept.

OE6 SP2 from WinXP SP2 is that *last version* and was replaced by Windows Mail in Vista

(basically, the same program).

I found the news reader in TB to be superior to OE. I have never tried

WLM on any OS. What is it you wanted to do that OE could do and TB couldn't?

I have found that using Fidolook in conjunction with OE6 overcomes most of OE's

short-comings.

I could never get the sorting the way I wanted it without the settings

affecting my mail also. IIRC, any new replies showed up as separate from the

original, even though I didn't have it set up to break them apart. It's been

a while, but that was part of it, and other minor stuff that I chose not to

deal with. I was also trying to write some message rules and was having a

terrible time trying to find any real support for it. So I just went back to

what I knew. I used to thrive on aggravation and adversity when I was a

working stiff, but I don't need that in retirement

I just use View --> Threads --> Threads with Unread and it's solved. It

doesn't affect mail.
