Dell Dimension PC, XP Pro

Got malware/viruses and needed to reload O/S. Could not load from CD on

machine so I reformatted drive and put in another Dell Dimension PC. HD is

reformatted and when I tell it to boot from CD I do not get the Press Key to

Boot from CD msg. It goes straight to the NTLDR is Missing msg, press C+A+D

to restart.

Anyone got a clue as to how I get PC to load from CD drive? I've set bios

and used the boot menu and it just is not happening.

unfortunately, I have little

ideas because setting

the bios to boot from cd

proves futile.

however, you were able to

boot somehow in order

to format the drive so the

disk is bootable if you

used its recovery console.

perhaps, the cmos battery

is not maintaining the settings

in the bios.

also, I would try the instructions

from here though they apply

to w2k it should work on xp.

How did you boot to Recovery Console for the format when you don't get the

"Press any key to boot from CD" message?

First, make sure there isn't a floppy disk in the computer. Then try testing the CD

by using it to boot a known good computer. Also, be advised that any changes

to the boot sequence in the BIOS setup must be saved before exiting.

Try overwriting (wiping) (not just formatting) the entire hard drive.

Takes a little while but should do the trick.

If you have partitions that likely still have data on them that you

want to save, just overwrite the space that you formatted for windows,

the C: drive. If nothing to save just do the whole thing.

Active@ KillDisk Free Edition I use this utility from ultimate

boot cd.

If you did it right and the drive was overwritten you will not have

the NTLDR message when you boot the hard drive. Then run windows or

other utility to format and install as usual.
