No sound with Realtek audio drivers since December update

I have had no sound on my laptop, a ThinkPad P52, since some time last month. The volume is supposedly up, and "Speaker/HP" is selected as the default output device, but in the volume mixer, the individual applications' volumes are stuck at 1. Spotify gives me a message that it cannot play tracks. Audio works fine on Linux on the same computer.I tried uninstalling the Realtek driver. When I restarted, Windows automatically reinstalled a 2017 version of the driver, which also did not work.
