No Drive Letter for USB Thumbdrive

Beginning a day or so ago, I no longer "see" or get a drive letter

when a thumb drive (any) is inserted in a usb port. I get the sound

notification that the drive is inserted (and recognized), the drive

shows up as a device under disk drives in the hardware manager and as

a drive under device manager. I can set a drive letter using the

drive manager under the computer services routine but that letter is

not seen by explorer. I've looked (googled) for similar problems with

other users but nothing seems to work. I'm using XP Pro, SP3 with all

updates, the system has been stable for months and just like that -

poof- no thumb drive! Any help would be appreciated.

After you give it a drive letter, unplug it, plug it in and then look.

Works for me...

Nope. But thanks for your tip. Apparently something drastic changed

but I can't identify the culprit.

Does the thumb drive work on another machine? Thumb drives don't last

forever. Or very long. Or sometimes not an hour.

Here is how you can check to see if the drive is even accessable

In disk management right click on the drive and take the "explore" option

Probably the most definitive resource for information on this kind of

problems is the following:

"Troubleshooting for USB drives"

"USBDLM V4.4.2 - USB Drive Letter Manager for Windows 2000, XP"

Thanks to all who made suggestions. None worked for me.

Let me explain in a bit more detail the situation. I have a number of

thumb drives. All work perfectly in my Dell laptop running windows xp

proffesional SP3 fully updated. None work in my desktop which is also

running xp professional sp3 fully updated. Here are some clues:

1. when inserting the thumbdrive I get the audio recognition. If I

then look at the window in the "Safely remove hardware" app, the

device shows up as ageneric device with no drive letter. If I look at

the diskmanager display under computer management services , the

device shows up and again with no drive letter. If I right click and

select add/change drive letter and then so choose one, the display

changes to now show the drive letter. Another righ click and Explore

I can view the contents of the drive. BUT BUT BUT the drive does not

show up in Explorer (or any other viewer or app). It was suggested

that once I add the drive letter I should remove the drive and then

re-insert. I tried that - no joy. I can find no reason behind this

situation and as I stated in my initial message it jst popped up in

the middle of one day. No error messages, no BSOD, nothing. Further,

trying one of the programs at the www.uwe-sieber.de site did not

correct the problem nor did any of the many suggestions there. Again

thanks for the suggestions.

Did you try to copy a file to the drive in question? Did you try

to subsequently try to read, copy or delete this test file? Can

you drag and drop to/from the thumb drive?

Try different scenarios to see what works and what doesn't.

Sometimes this is all it takes to correct these "strange"

situations.

I have never seen what you describe but who knows...it could

happen to any one of us.

Do you have TweakUI for Windows installed? I know there is a setting in

TweakUI to make drive letters available, or not, under My Computer>

Drives. Maybe you have new drive letters set to unavailable? Just a

thought.

Is the port working properly? Can you get another USB device to work in

I've been able to "read" files from each device using PC Inspector

File Recovery. This program can "see" the drive (as does disk

management service) even though it has no drive letter. I can't copy

or drag a file to the device since it doesn't show up in explorer or

any other program as a devide with a drive letter. This even after I

add a drive letter under disk mamagement. A drive letter is assigned

under disk manager but it never shows up in any program that would be

used to view/copy/manipulate the contents of the drive. This is

really driving me nuts. And thanks for the tips.

Yes, all of the ports I've tried are working as I can plug external

hard drives into them and the drives are recognized and given a drive

letter.

I just wanted to add a bit more info. All of the thumb drives are

visible and fully functional in a BartPE environment. The BartPE

system was built on the same XP files (minus updates since last April)

on which I'm now having the problem. I've uninstalled the relevent

drivers (which get reinstalled) so I'm down to a registry problem and

have no idea how to go about trying to sort through that rat's nest.

Unless I hear something soon I guess I'll just reinstall the system.

One word: Crap!

Thanks for the past suggestions. Don

Ok. Here's a real longshot... In the past, I believe that I lost

Explorer access to USB Thumbdrives after installing Adobe Elements. I

don't think it was the "Elements" program itself, but rather a download

manager that installed with it. I think if it detected a .jpg file on

the USB, it thought it was a camera and took over control of the

device. Uninstalling the program fixed the problem. You might try

using msconfig (Start->Run-> "msconfig") to test-eliminate some of the

programs that run at startup to see if any have an effect.
