New User Labeled "Temp". How do I get rid of it and switch to my previous user account?

As subject line states, we've got a laptop that's been acting flaky. Earlier this week, I booted it up and found that my email shows no profiles (I use thunderbird) several pieces of software that I've bought and entered a serial/authorization number no longer has the authorization. I suspect this is because I'm using the new "temp" user and can't find a way to move to a different user. All helps I've seen indicated that my choices should should up on login screens but they don't appear. Any ideas?
