New Outlook not importing calendar events

My father has been using the Windows calendar app to keep track of bookings. He has been using it without any accounts to sync to cloud, just as a standalone calendar. Now we are unable to open the calendar, we are directed to the New Outlook sign in. We tried this in hope that the calendar events would be imported, but this was not the case. How can I get the calendar events from the app, when I cannont open it to export them?
