.NET update will not install

I have an XP system that I just rebuilt that will not install Microsoft .NET

Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server

2003, and Windows XP (KB974417).

The system is running XP Media Center Edition SP3 and is part of a small

domain. No other XP systems (a mixture of Pro and MCE) have this problem.

All other .NET versions with their service packs and updates have installed

with no problem. This includes .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 KB958481 and KB976569.

It's only KB974417 that will not install.

I have Googled this problem and I believe I have tried every suggestion I've

found. This includes removing all .NET using the dotnetfx cleanup tool and

then reinstalling them in the order of .NET 3.5, .NET 1.1, then .NET 1.1 SP1.

The .NET 3.5 SP1 also installs 2.0 SP2 and 3.0 SP2.

I'm using WSUS on the domain and it shows the install as failed. When I

tried to manually install the update via Windows Update I get the Event Log

error "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update

with error 0x80070643: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Security

Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (KB974417)."

Downloading from MS and manually installing KB974417

(NDP20SP2-KB974417-x86.exe) gives me the message "None of the products that

are addressed by this software update are installed on this computer. Click

Cancel to exit setup."

What can I do to get this update installed? It was installed prior to the

rebuild and the only thing changed hardware-wise is the new hard drive (old

one died).

I think you need to install 1.1 and 1.1 SP1 first, then apply 3.5.

According to KB976982, 3.5 must be installed first. I don't know why, but

that's what it says.

I really don't think this is a WSUS problem since I've tried to install the

update from Windows Update as well as downloading the standalone KB exe and

running that.

Also, KB 976982 is one of the articles I followed trying to resolve this.

That's where I mainly got the idea of doing what I outlined in my original

post. It didn't help.

So I'm still back at square one. No other PC in this domain had this problem

including this one before I rebuilt it. It's only since I rebuilt it that

this KB will not install. I know there must be something that needs to be

done within Windows, either a registry tweak or something.

I am having the exact same problem. Replaced a hard drive, reinstalled

Windows XP Pro SP3 from a Dell OEM CD, added to a domain simply to allow WSUS

to work it's magic, and reliably getting failures with the same error codes

on this one update.

I first was receiving the error after installing from an Windows XP Pro SP2

CD (couldn't find the SP3 flavor) so today just decided to wipe AGAIN and

reinstall from the SP3 disc I found. When I run manually, I get the "None of

the products that are addressed by this software update are installed on this

computer. Click Cancel to exit setup." message.

Apart from calling Microsoft or opening a ticket, does anyone have a

solution or any further update on this issue?

Hi there,

Had the same problem. This is what I did to fix:

I've found that you need to un-install KB976569 (released

2/23/10), then install 974417. Then you can re-install 976569.

Wish my solution was that simple. It seems that I have both of those

updates queued for install, but neither will install. It seems that

.net 2.0 SP2 is not installed, nor can it be installed. I guess I'm

down to just ignoring the updates, or I'll be stripping out the .net

goodies and reinstalling.
