I have an HP laptop with a Windows 7 installation partition & I've used this partition to do a clean install of Windows 7 a couple of times in the past. I recently received an invite to upgrade to Windows 10 & decided to do a clean install of Windows 7 before upgrading as my computer was running slowly. After installing Windows 7, I began the updating process. After the third series of updates, Windows began endlessly checking for updates, but never found any to install. Consequently, this updating process continued running in the background & my computer slowed to a crawl. I spent about 8 hours looking for troubleshooting tips online & tried numerous fixes, such as uninstalling the antivirus software, uninstalling & reinstalling the .NET updates (which succeeded in getting me out of the updating cycle, until it reinstalled subsequent updates & I went back into this cycle), running a system scan, using the Mr. Fixit Tool, etc. I also tried to reinstall Windows 7 again & tried to directly upgrade to Windows 10 using the media tool, to no avail.
I called Microsoft Tech Support 2 days later & the rep remotely took control of my computer, running the same steps I had run 2 days prior, & he could not resolve the issue. He transferred my case to a level 2 engineer, who called me 2 days later. The level 2 engineer also took control of my computer & first attempted to directly install Windows 10 & then attempted to install the Windows 7 updates, both of which I had attempted previously & both of which did not resolve the problem. While attempting to install the Windows 7 updates, my computer entered an endless reboot cycle, where it would attempt to install an update, & then revert the changes, causing my computer to reboot. When the level 2 engineer called me back a few hours later, I explained to him what was happening & he indicated that I should just allow the computer to continue rebooting, assuring me that it would stop at some point. After 22 hours of rebooting endlessly, I realized that this endless reboot would never stop, & I shut the computer down. Upon restarting, it went back into the endless reboot cycle. I've been without my computer for 5 days now & I cannot go with my computer much longer. I'm hoping someone can help me resolve this issue.
Here are the series of messages I see after my computer reboots:
1. On a black screen, there is a message that says "Applying update operation X of X (registry/machine/components/...)", where X is the update number.
2. Shortly afterward, I see a blue screen that says "Stage 3 of 3, Preparing to configure Windows, Do not shut down your computer".
3. A few seconds later I see a blue screen that says, "Stage 3 of 3, Failure configuring Windows updates, Reverting changes, Do not shut down your computer".
After a few seconds, the computer reboots & these same steps repeat themselves. I should also add that the same update numbers in step 1 have appeared repeatedly throughout the 22 hours of rebooting, & therefore it appears that Windows is attempting to install & then uninstall the same updates again & again. Shutting down my computer doesn't resolve the issue, as the endless reboot cycle simply restarts again upon booting up my computer.
I have no idea what to do at this point. I called Microsoft Tech Support back again & they gave me a special tech support number to call, but the tech support person at that number said that she could not help me since she is at a level lower than level 2. She suggested that I wait for a level 2 person to call me back in a couple of days. Meanwhile I have no computer to use. I've already spent over 12 hours trying to troubleshoot this issue, not counting all the time my computer has been usable or simply rebooting.
I'm hoping someone can help me to stop this reboot cycle so that I can start trying to find a solution to this problem. Thank you very much in advance.
