My Windows Update process is repeatedly cycling between "Getting things ready" and "Installing", without successfully completing the update

I've been trying to update my Windows system for the past few days. It starts by saying "getting things ready", then goes to "installing." Once the installing goes to 100%, it resets to "getting things ready" at 0%. Overall, it seems as if the updating process is going in a non-stop cycle where it is unable to successfully update.
