My windows media player isnt playing many videos or music. There is no download codec automatically in the tools section. Now what do I do?

I am having A LOT of problems with my Windows Media player legacy. Its not playing many videos or music so it is a codec problem. I went into the tools section and there isnt a box to click on to automatically download codec. What do I do now????
