My screen flickers on and off when restarting from deep sleep (all lights off) while on battery. Why?

The flickering seems to be mouse related...when I move the mouse, the screen goes to black and stays black until I find a good spot with the mouse. The only solution to fix this problem that I have been able to find is to power down and power back up. Then usually everything works fine. The only variation to these conditions were when I exhausted the battery, and, after plugging in and repowering, the condition persisted while I rebooted a few times.I have tried to update video and mouse drivers. I have changed the battery on my external mouse, but in any case, the same thing happens with
