My Lenovo laptop runs a 64 bit version of Windows 8 but Windows Update does not work at all. What can I do to fix Windows Update and Windows Defender

When I try to launch Windows Update I get an error code: 80072EFE but no solution to fix the error. Also, my Windows Defender will not update. It starts the process and then stops and shows me the last virus and malware definitions that were installed back in June of 2023. Does anyone know how to get around these problems so I can install update for all Windows 8 updates?
