My laptop doesn't recognize my headphones when plugged in.

When I troubleshoot my laptops audio devices it shows my headphones, but in troubleshooting it says that the problem is that my audio device isn't plugged in, but it is. I've plugged it in and it still doesn't recognize it. I have tried everything( I think). Need help, before I give up.
