My laptop always projects to my desktop by default when connecting HDMI. How do I make it go the other way around?

I have a desktop computer at my desk in my uni and a laptop, and I have been trying to connect the two using an HDMI cable. However, when I connect them, the laptop always projects its screen onto my desktop by default. I want the desktop to project to my laptop instead. How do I do this? The steps I've followed to do this:- connect HDMI. The laptop automatically projects using "extend screen"- on my laptop settings, I choose "show only on 1" so it doesn't project but HDMI is still plugged in- on my desktop settings, I go to "display" settings to try and change projections but it doesn't show
