My disk space

So the story begins where I was trying to update steam and it says that I need at least 250 MB of disk space, so I look at how much storage I have and it says I have 1.78 PB of storage left (on my external hard drive), I tried to clean up my disk space and deleting files and I just don’t know what to do! Could somebody be my savior and help me with this? Please and thank you :)
