My computer will not update, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about what I could do?

Hello, I have been trying to update my HP laptop for a few days and it will not work. The Windows Update screen only consists of the image near the top left corner, a red circle with a white exclamation point right below, a grey rectangle, and a four other small images. Their is no other words on the screen, but I am assuming the grey rectangle is the check for updates button. When I click that button it begins loading and several possible updates then appear on the screen. Their is no where for me to actually conduct the updates or see their status.
