My computer is suppressing audio on it's own

I have been having an issue with my system for the past few years where, seemingly at random when audio from 2 different sources overlap (such as audio from a discord call and audio from a video game) the computer will arbitrarily suppress the audio from one or both sources greatly reducing the volume and filtering it to sound like the audio is being played from the far side of an empty warehouse. The only way to fix this issue that I've found is to close the source of the audio and re-open it, or in the case of the discord call, leave and re-join.Any help with how to stop this from happening,
