Hi.

I recently went into msconfig and shut off some programs at startup. I did

not start anything else up. I shut off something to do with my photoediting

program, ZuneLauncher (I have a Zune player and the software installed) and

an icon that pops up to open and edit my HIDef Audio Deck. The Audio Deck is

not the driver or anything, my sound still works. It is the interface to

adjust sound properties like the sound icon/option you can adjust in windows

notmally. I adjusted NOTHING else.

In msconfigs general tab it is not on Normal startup (to load all device

drivers and services). It's on Selective start up. All processes are checked

and the use original BOOT.INI is selected too.

When I turn on my computer a message pops up when windows is loaded. Before

I can click on icons and use the START menu: It says something about system

configeration has been modified, it will always open at start up and the only

way to stop it is by clicking on Normal Startup in the General tab. But I

want to keep those 3 processes off at startup. I can click a box that will

disable the message and stop system config from opening up.

Is this a problem? Or just happening to notify me I changed those things and

I can change it back? My system is running smoothly (? :-??????), so I think

I should just check the box to stop the message from appearing.

I changed somethings in Computer management - Services and Applications -

Services. I also am having problems find information about certain processes

and would like some help. (A person can also go to: Start - Right-click My

Computer - select Manage)

When I set a process to Manual do I need to press start the service? Or will

it start when the service is needed? (eg: Something is plugged in, or a

program started or a program ran, a windows update, etc)

I installed Zune software and iTunes. I turned all those associated

processes to manual. I did the same with some services associated with my

music making program or other programs I can clearly read about in the

descriptions. I looked at everything tonight and was more thorough and pretty

much left everything alone. Because I can understand some are vital and need

to be automatic and some are only used when needed and set at manual. Again,

my system is running.

About some specific services:

I know messenger is not msn mesenger. On microsofts web-site it said that

regular home computer users can shut that off. On this site it was

recommended I leave that on always. Can I leave this as Manual? - Do I have

to start the service? It was Disabled and I'v never touched it. If I have my

laptop and desktop connected: Do I need to have it on?

Should .NET Runtime Optimization Service 32-bit be left as automatic, or

manual? Do I need to start the service if stopped? What is this and what is

it used for? I'v seen updates downloaded in automatic updates.

Should Telephony be automatic, manual or disabled? I do not run a phone or

fax through my computer, only the internet LAN connection. Someone at work

told me this is useless and it's ok to shut it off.

Is it ok for Logical Disk Manager to be set to Manual? Should I start the

serice then? Or should it always be set to Automatic? Are hard-disk drives

only hard-drives or also dvd-rom drives, usb, flash, etc? I know there is a

smart card process and universal-plug and play ones. Those are probably

manual I left them.

I am tweaking. Today I'm done and only will undo as needed. Thank you for

the help. Laptop is next..........Desktop

needs..............imaging..............ugg........so close.........

Which problem do you want solved.

Try one problem at a time.

On the MSconfig advisory window: There is a little box in the lower left corner that you can check

so that it will not show every time your start.

In msconfig: Is it a problem if in srat-up I shut off Reader-sl: It's to do

with Adobe Acrobat Reader.?

No problems. On the message screen you will also find a small square

box where

you need to click to indicate do not show this message again. Just

click on it

so that a tick appears next to it. This will stop this message from

appearing again.

You need to be an administrator or user with these privileges for this

to stick.

Isn't the Start-up Programs grey with a check instead of white with a

check.

You yourself said the config has been modified.

Are these question marks from a foreign language?

Reader-sl is Adobe reader speed launch. You can do with out that.

If you only use adobe reader one sessoin out of two or so, you're

better off with one slow launch than two speed launches (which require

starting some of it at start-up. There is no such thing as a free

lunch.)

You can shut off any service you want in MSConfig. there is no problem at

all except that launching these applications may take some 10 seconds more

to open.

No. This is the "speed launcher" which "Speeds up the time it takes to

load the Adobe Reader PDF document reader."

If you are concerned about tasks that start at boot time, this is a very

useful web site to know about: http://www.sysinfo.org/startupinfo.html

Although, as others have explained, you can check a box to keep msconfig

from reminding you that you have used it to disable something, you can

instead use one of the many start-up control applications -- as long as

you pick one with an "undo" function.

One of the most powerful (and therefore most dangerous) of these is

Autoruns from Sysinternals:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

Another similar utility that is still pretty powerful but less likely to

get you into quite as severe difficulty if you delete the wrong thing is

Code Stuff Starter: http://codestuff.tripod.com/products_starter.html

Whether you use Autoruns, Starter, or another similar utility, I suggest

that you "disable" startup items (typically by unchecking the box next

to the item) rather than "deleting" the item. "Disabled" startup items

can be restored simply by re-checking the box. Usually, once a startup

item is "deleted," it's gone for good.
