MS Paint backgrounds

I need to super impose a patterned area onto a specific area of another image. I have tried highlighting the area using the lasso selection tool, highlighting the pattern and copying/pasting into the main image, but it just pastes in the shape of the highlighted area of pattern. I tried with and without transparent selection too.Any help appreciated.
