Microsoft,

I hope you read this entire post. I know it's long but you will see the obvious issue here is lack of training. I included the case #'s in hopes someone will look this up to confirm which agent(s) and supervisor(s) are spreading misinformation about your products and hoping more people aren't swindled into paying money for something that is free, like I almost did.

Case #: 1006245916 (but then agent changed it to 1006245416 and I later found out that ...5416 is not a valid case # - yeah, it starts off like this, imagine what's next lol!)

On 6/12/20 I spoke to two different agents at Microsoft about reinstalling Microsoft Windows 10. The first agent (didn't get his name) was in tech support and the second agent (Christian) was in sales but said he used to work in tech support. Both agents insisted I needed to purchase Windows 10 (later I found this NOT to be true!). I explained I did a factory reset and my PC reverted my operating system back to Windows 7 Pro (which is what it came with when I purchased it) so I just needed to reinstall Windows 10 from the free upgrade I received.

The first agent told me there is no way to reinstall Windows 10 for free. He even went to his supervisor to confirm I would still need to purchase Windows 10. However, when I asked him why the Microsoft community forums all say Windows 10 can be reinstalled without having to purchase it again...

Start fresh with a clean installation of Windows 10

...he didn't have an answer but still insisted there is no way to go back to Windows 10 unless I buy it. Then I asked him about Microsoft's Media Creation Tool. Only then did he acknowledge this can be used but he then warned me that I can download Windows 10 again using this tool but I won't be able to activate it, so it will work but my Windows 10 would not have the full features (i.e., I wouldn't receive automatic updates etc.) and then said if I wanted the full version I would have to pay $139 for the Home version or $199 for the Pro version. Again, I don't know why he held this information about the Media Creation Tool back from me until I brought it up. He then said if I want to purchase the full license, he would need to transfer me to their sales department.

After I was transferred, I spoke with Christian in sales (he later said he used to work in tech support so I felt I could trust getting a 2nd opinion from him - and remember...I'm speaking directly to the source...Microsoft and two different agents and apparently a supervisor was part of this misinformation! So just remember this part in the end). So I explained my issue to him and Christian also confirmed there was no way to get Windows 10 back on my PC unless I purchased the full license. He said Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 in January 2020 and I won't be able to download the free copy again so I will now have to pay for Windows 10. I then asked Christian about the Media Creation Tool and he also said it wouldn't be the full version. I then told him I had Windows 7 Pro so can I assume my free upgrade was 10 Pro? But he said it was most likely the Home version not the Pro (WRONG!). Then this agent started explaining why the Media Creation Tool won't work. He said Media Creation Tool is a copy of Windows 10 and can only be used for Windows 10 but now that I have Windows 7 after my factory reset, I can't get Windows 10 unless I purchase it.

So I assumed this was all true since I spoke to two different agents from Microsoft and since the first agent put me on hold to ask his supervisor and came back and confirmed I must purchase Windows 10.

HOWEVER! I then called Norton Ultimate Help Desk. This is a service I pay for and Norton's tech told me that Microsoft is WRONG! Norton told me "the activation for Windows 10 will not be an issue because my PC will have a digital entitlement key stored on the Microsoft Activation Servers. Guess what? Norton was correct and Microsoft was wrong! Why in the world Norton has to get this right is SOOOO wrong on so many levels. Just think about the irony in all this! So the Norton tech took control of my PC via remote session, then he went to Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, downloaded it and it WORKED! I was never prompted for any activation key, I didn't have to pay anything and guess what was installed...Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (not Home version) contrary to what Microsoft assumed.

I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am to know that I went to the source - Microsoft, then I spoke to not one, but two different agents and one of those agents checked with his supervisor and nobody at Microsoft could give me accurate information. Instead, if I listened to Microsoft, I would have paid $139-$199 that I didn't have to! I wonder how many customers have already done the same!!!?

So I ask you to look up this case #1006245916. I also feel it's important to note that when I called Microsoft back today on 6/14/20 and I spoke to another Microsoft tech (Case #: 1006300548 who confirmed the techs I spoke to the other day were not giving me accurate information) this tech today at Microsoft assumed I must have called the wrong # and assumed I didn't speak with Microsoft because of the misinformation I was given the other day - yeah, it was that bad that he just assumed I spoke to someone else claiming to be Microsoft. However, I then told him it was in fact Microsoft because they sent a survey after the call! He was embarrassed. This tech today also went on my PC and confirmed I have the full version of Microsoft 10.

I would also like to point out that my call today (6/14/20) with Microsoft (case #: 1006300548) went very well! This tech knew what he was talking about, apologized for the misinformation I received the other day and fixed another issue I had! But talk about night and day experiences with your tech support team!

Microsoft. Please start providing the Microsoft tech team better training and please, please make sure those two agents I spoke with on 6/12/20 do NOT continue to tell your customers wrong information and make them pay money they don't need to, like I almost did! Goodness!
