Microsoft Update fails in Windows 2000

I have both Vista (64-bits) and Win2000 on my machine. In Vista, Microsoft
Update works faultlessly, but in Win2000 the downloads frequently stops, and
if they succeed, the installations often freeze, requiring a hard reset and
reboot. Consequently only a few of the Win2000 updates ever get installed,
which worries me quite a bit. (I need Win2000 in order to run some older
software and use some older peripherals, that don't work with Vista 64) What
can I do to get Win2000 properly updated?
Trond Ruud,

Check the WindowsUpdate.log for error codes, Trond.

%windir%\windowsupdate.log
Click OK

Post the last 50 or lines of the log that, hopefully, contain FATAL
error codes.

Hi MowGreen,
By now, I have more or less given up on Windows update, so there were not
many FATALs in the last 50 lines, but I located a FATAL a bit furter up, and
have tried to include the events that preceded (caused?) it:

0x80072F8F = One or more errors were found in the Secure Sockets Layer
(SSL) certificate sent by the server.

It appears that the error is server side, not with the Win 2K box,
Trond. Suggest you opt out of Microsoft Update and go back to Windows
Update. To do so revisit MU and click the Change Settings link in the
left frame. [ MU is not installed here and I'm going by memory, which is
not as good as it use to be <w>] Then uncheck the box for MU in the
right frame.

Then initiate a manual visit to Windows Update and see if any updates
can be installed. If not, then copy&paste the section of the
WindowsUpdate.log for that session into your reply, please.

Is a proxy server being used for the Win 2K box ?

Also, check to see if the latest Windows Update Agent has been installed
by navigating to WINNT\system32 and locating wuaueng.dll
It should be at V. 7.0.6000.374 if the latest version of the WUA is
installed
If it is not, download and save it from here:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

Close the browser and any other open programs
Install WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

Hi MowGreen
I followed your recommendations and the Windows Update Agent seemed to
install OK, and the present wuaueng.dll version is 7.0.6000.374. But trying
to run Windows Update keeps on stopping with an [Error number:
0x80072EFD]-message, and I already have the specified trusted sites declared
in the IE Security sites, so it must be something very wrong either with my
Win2000 or with Windows Update in Win2000 (Win updates works fine in Vista,
on the same box, however, so its probably not a hardware or a communication
issue with my ISP)
Regards
Trond

Give this a shot:

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message
when you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update
Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

Try Step 6 first: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy
configuration

I'm fairly certain the command listed works in Win 2K.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, then check the hosts file.
If still no joy, suggest you give the Guided Help a try.
