Microsoft Store blocks apps from running

I recently got a new computer running Windows 11 Pro. I successfully downloaded several external apps from the internet, but when I try to run them the Microsoft Store blocks them with the error message "we couldn't verify and install this because it is not available in the Microsoft Store. We'll help you look for the app with Bing". I have made sure Windows is not in S mode and Apps> Advanced> Choose Where to Get Apps is set to "Anywhere" so I am not sure what the cause of this issue is.
