microsoft security essentials full scan time

I ran a full scan on my Windows 7 system which took over 22 hours with no other activity going on with my computer. Under settings I had CPU usage at 90%. After seeing that scan had been running for 22 hours, and seemed to be only half done, I changed setting to 50% and scan was completed almost immediately. Scan results showed no issues. Does anyone have any idea why this occurred?
