Although I found responses to a very similar question, those answers were not definitive yes or no answers but stated instead that scanning email is not necessary, only email attachments need to be scanned.

I'm having problems getting settings with my ISP and my Thunderbird (sorry, but I prefer it to Outlook) mail client done correctly. Mozilla support forums asked if my AV software (MSE) is set to scan outgoing mail. This question is raised because I can establish a link to the ISP mail server but no messages are crossing from my system and the link times out.

SO: Does MSE scan outbound email messages? If so, can the scanning be turned off? If it scans only attachments, can that be overridden?

Similarly, I'd like a definitive description of how MSE processes inbound email. Does it scan at all? Does it scan only attachments? Can the scan be disabled? (if only for problem solving).

Thank you for any light you can shed on this issue.
