My Dad (age 94 but still going fairly strong) got onto his computer last night and was greeted by a large pop-up claiming his computer has a large error in Windows 10. It said he should dial this number and they will fix it for him. He tried to delete the pop up but couldn't so he called the number. The scammers managed get him to type a number into a new pop-up screen and then the scammers were able to take remote control of his computer. They "demonstrated" this remote control and got into his files so he could see. They said they would fix the error for $495 (program had the word "samaurai" in it) and he gave them 8 of the 16 numbers on his credit card before Mom stopped him. The company may have been Credence Incorporated and may be located in Las Vegas. The number he called may have been 888-857-2658. We have reported it to Microsoft. We have addressed the credit card issue and changed all his passwords on email and financial institutions. We also ran the programs listed in:
