Microphone being extremely quiet

I was calling my friend the other day and he noted that my microphone was extremely quiet to the point that he had to turn up his volume to the max to barely hear what I was saying. I did a microphone test and, sure enough, my microphone was really quiet. I use a (relatively new) pair of earbuds so maybe they've just stopped working? Thank you in advance.
