MIcrophone barely picks anything up

I'm having microphone volume issues. I checked everywhere but nobody has the same problem, only similar ones. Basically, my microphone doesn't work until it's right in front of my mouth, and I literally need to eat the microphone to get a decent volume. And yes, I already changed the gain to the max and set the level to the max. I already checked for if it's muted, and the gain is also the only reason that the built-in microphone works, because otherwise it too would be experiencing the same thing. Them both having this issue leads me to believe that something is wrong with the computer itself
