All problems started after running Windows Update on 3.10.2021 (~5GB downloaded). The 1st symptom was that the Cryptographic Service often ties up my 1TB HDD for long periods.
Lenovo x64 laptop, AMD Ryzen 5 purchased November 2020, with Win10 (1909?) pre-installed. I did no previous multi-gigabyte update, until on 3.10.2021 when it became mandatory.
I cannot install any more updates, either via Windows Update or manually from the catalog.
MS Update Troubleshooter msdt.exe says: error 0x800705B4
If I try any update, it goes through the whole process, then reports that it failed. (E.g., trying KB4577586 manually from the catalog, looks all normal until the very end with: "not installed". Or trying via Windows Update does the same thing.
I have done many many reboots.
sfc /scannow
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
(sfc will often hang before exiting, until I manually end the Cryptographic Service by using Task Manager)
I just tried again with a single bad file (described in CBS.log as: hashes don't match, and both files are corrupted)
C:\WINDOWS\system32>sfc /SCANFILE=C:\Windows\System32\eqossnap.dll
"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
Running sfc in Safe Mode made no difference.
DISM says "...is repairable"
but then C:\WINDOWS\system32>DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
says: The source files could not be found.
Note that DISM says "Image Version: 10.0.19041.1" which AFAIK is Windows 2004,
even though on 3-10-2021 I was forced to upgrade to 10H2
Both winver and Settings/System/About each say I have Version 2004. But in Settings/Update/View Update History it says: Feature Update to 20H2 ... successfully installed 3.10.2021
under "Uninstall an update", I have listed only these two:
KB4562830 (enable 20H2)
KB4598481 (security update)
chkdsk said it fixed some files, but there is no improvement. But the contents of CBS.log changed somewhat.
CBS.log says that these are bad:
cmi2migxml.dll
mobsync.exe
netcorehc.dll
eqossnap.dll
netcorehc.dll
WSDPrintProxy.DLL (but I never use any printer)
WWanHC.dll
PNPXAssoc.dll
Can I manually fix/replace them? I do not have another, healthy PC with Win10 to get replacements from. Why can't I simply get individual replacements from Microsoft online?
In exasperation, I tried to Cloud Reset to 2004. I got "There was a problem downloading. Unable to download. Please try Reset this PC using the local reinstall option."
How to reset your PC using the new cloud download in Windows
But what I REALLY REALLY REALLY want is to fix this without losing all my files and data. I have plenty of HDD space. But I don't want to spend half a day on my slow connection downloading 5GB for a repair-install, only to have that fail. E.g.: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16397-repair-install-windows-10-place-upgrade.html
"If you have Windows 10 version 20H2 installed, then it is required to have KB4586853 for build 19042.662 or higher installed to be able to do a repair install and keep everything."
I have set the time period for going back to my previous Win10 version (1909?) from 10 days to 60 days. I also have just now renamed my Windows.old file to Windows.old.ren so that it shouldn't be auto deleted. I have also paused Windows Update to the maximum, as all it ever does anymore is go through the download and install, then report "Failed".
Possible complicating factors: I have installed Android Studio, which set up a virtual phone via virtualization. I also run FortiClient AV and so I have in my list of possible internet connections FortiSSL (but my antivirus installation is only for me as a individual, I am not part of any network). Could either of those have changed my "bad" DLLs?
I ran sfc and DISM with FortiClient AV disabled and Win Defender enabled, but that made no difference.
I made a USB restore disk, but only after the 3.10.2021 problems.
The only System Restore point I have listed is for 3.14.2021, which is after the 3.10.2021 beginning of all the problems.
Is my only option to Restore back to my previous major version (1909?), and then have to spend another half day upgrading to 20H2 again, only to possibly have all the problems repeat?
Thanks for any help.
