Hello there,

After switching restore points back and forth I would say 5 or 6 times in an

effort to improve my pc I seem to have gone from 20 gb to 3 gb of free

memory space..Does all this restoring consume gigabytes?..Now I find I have

to remove programs in order to fragment my disk...Thanks,Nick

How many partitions do you have? Are all of them set to be monitored by

system restore? How much space is allotted for system restore? Have you

tried removing all but the latest system restore points?

Just C: and maximum space has been allowed for restore point but the pc has

always been as such from day one and I have not changed any

settings...Wasn't a need til recently.I will mention that while using the

restore recently it always took from 2-3 hours which is weird..In the

distant past I remember it would take about a half hour...Thanks,Nick

No need to turn it off, just reduce the size, look at the last image on

the link I googled for.

Every time you run System Restore, you do use up more disk space (to add

those new restore points), up to the maximum amount alloted (in the

settings), at which point the oldest ones will be overwritten.

Up to the point of the amount of space allocated for it, yes. You didn't

mention your drive size but the REstore is defaulted to something like 12%

of disk space? Not sure of number bit it's substantial.

Your disk is too full; you need a larger disk at least. Adjusting the

restore points space will only be a bandaid; you'll shortly be out of space

again. Once a disk is 3/4 full you're starting to push things and slowdowns

get more noticeable.

HTH,

Twayne`

When you do a system restore, the registry is saved which allows you to undo

the restore. This of course

requires disk space. Since your computer is running properly, I suggest you

run disk cleanup with the

option of clearing all but the latest system restore. Then run defrag.

When the next system restore is recorded it will save your current operating

condition.

For the longer term, go to system properties and adjust the amount of

disk space that can be used to save system restore data.

It's allocated as a percentage of the disk size and with today's huge

disks the default value can amount to tens of gigabytes of essentially

useless data.

If you happen to need it, it is extremely useful. However, you have to have

an enormous sized HD

to have one six months old.
