large pst file from end users what to do to manage it

hello all we have 5 to 10 laptop end users with large pst files. we are looking for a solution, first archiving on there laptops is ok but if there laptop crashes good by pst. and I tested parking the pst on the network but when end user vpn in and that pst is attached it is very slow. what solutions do you guys recommend? I will post this on exchange 2010 as well. by the way its outlook 2010 as well as exchange 2010. How about the cloud, keep in mind we are looking that they do not experience slowness if we go the cloud route. Also we are going the route as telling them to trim it down but that is just part of it. I remember years ago symantec had some kind of back pst to the cloud and when you needed it u entered your user name and password then it will pull it down.
