Laptop making sound like air through a straw.

Recently my laptop has started to make a sound when audio is supposed to be playing. it sounds like air rushing through a straw and the video audio sounds far away. this happens even when the audio is muted. i have tried to uninstall and update the drivers to no avail. Can anyone help please?Thank you!
