Laptop crashes after unplugging external monitor

I have a Dell laptop that the screen died on and it's ok while my external monitor is connected. However when I unplug the monitor to use it with another device the pc will crash. I'm not sure if it crashes immediately or when I try to connect the montior again. Only way to recover is hard reset. No issues shown in device manager.
