When I run the installation package for this update I keep getting the msg
'Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the
Cryptographic
service is running on this computer.'

Is there a solution to this that might help me install the security package
KB950740?
The executable I run is WindowsXP-KB950740-x86-ENU.exe

Hello Joe,

Start/Run
Type "services.msc"
Click "OK"

Please check the following are started:

1.Automatic Updªtes
2.Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
3.Cryptographic Services
4.Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
5.System Restore Service

To verify that BITS is correctly configured :

1. Double-click `Background Intelligent Transfer Service.`
2. In the Startup type box, click Manual, and then Apply.
3. Click the `Log On` tab, and then verify that the service is enabled in
every hardware profile that you have listed. If the service is disabled in
one or more hardware profiles, click the hardware profile, Enable, and then
Apply.
4. Click the General tab and then Start.

If BITS starts successfully, visit the Windows Update Web site or the
Microsoft Update Web site to see if you can obtain updates. If it works OK,
change (2.) to automªtic.

Reboot

Engel,

I am pretty sure I followed you instructions.

The RPC was the only one that was stopped so I started it.
Under the Log On tab the 'This Account' option button was enabled
and there was a a userid (I think) and password both filled in with
'*******". I changed the option button and enabled the other one,
'Local System Account'. A checkbox 'Allow service to interact with
desktop automatcially got checked. Now the entire Log On window
shows faded but I can' access anything except the checkbox, which
I can still uncheck.

I changed the option button to the Local System account because
everything else had that option checked.

I hope I did not make things worse.

Unfortunately, I still get the 'Setup could not verify the integrity of the
file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this
computer.' when I tried to update.

Thanks for your help.

Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic
service is running on this computer.

1. Start, Run, type: Services.msc
Make sure "Cryptographic Services" service is running and the Startup type is Automatic.
If it isn't, right-click the service and select Properties and set to Automatic. If the
service is not shown as "Started", you can start it by clicking the Start button.
Close the Services control panel and try installing the service pack or security patch.

2. If "Cryptographic Services" service was already running then stop the service by
clicking the Stop button, then using Windows Explorer, locate the folder
Windows\System32\catroot2 and rename it to something like catrootold. Now restart
"Cryptographic Services" by clicking the Start button, and try installing the update.

3. If the update still fails to install, stop the "Cryptographic Services" service.

Open a command prompt window (click Start, Run, type cmd and hit Enter) and then type the
following commands:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Restart "Cryptographic Services" by clicking the Start button again, and try installing
the update.

TaurArian,

Thanks to your suggestions I got this security update to install with success.
I did have a problem executing your Step 2. - my computer hung up because
the app WindowsXP-KB950740-x86-ENU.exe was looking for update.inf. Eventually,
the lock on my comptuer timed out but I could not start IE. I looked to see if
catroot2 (after I renamed it another was not created) was still missing and
it was.
I rebooted and noticed there was another catroot2 and 'services.msc' revealed
the cryptographic service was stopped. I restarted it and then ran
WindowsXP-KB950740-x86-ENU.exe and the installation was successful.

Thank you for you help.
