Is Windows changing more than just itself?

I have recently noticed some unsettling changes to my Win 10 desktop and programs that seem to occur after Windows performs an update. For one thing, Windows arbitrarily changed the background on my desktop. Admittedly this wasn't a big deal, and I fixed it easily. A more disturbing and troublesome change was to a music editing program I use (Audacity). I left a file open in this program, went to bed, and when I checked the machine the next morning the file had closed and a new version of the program was installed.
