Is syncing Desktop now required in OneDrive?

It seems as of the latest update that syncing Desktop is required in OneDrive?I don't want to sync my desktop. I use my different devices for different purposes and don't want the same icons on all of them. I don't have the same apps on all my devices, and even the ones I do have aren't always in the same location. But as of the latest update, I don't seem to be able to turn that off:According to the help when you click "Learn more":This is terrible. What do I do about it?
