Is it safe to turn off Bitlocker?

For some reason, my computer starts up Bitlocker every time it restarts or shuts down; I have the recovery key but it's always a pain to type. I was wondering if it's safe to just turn off Bitlocker. I've been thinking about doing it but I still want to keep my files safe.
