is it possible for me to use the microphone on my headset alongside the headset itself?

i am trying to use these headphones with a mic attached to them however i am unable to use the headphones or the mic at the same time. when i plug them in i am asked if i had connected a microphone or headset. selecting the mic allows me to speak but i cannot hear anything. selecting the headset allows me to hear but not use the mic as it is considered "Not plugged in". is it a mistake on my part or is it bad luck?
